Mobile phones are now ubiquitous technology. The number of active connections nearly equals the number of people alive globally. The majority of people in developing countries currently use mobile phones solely for calling and texting only. Although this is changing fast with the availability of data through the cellular networks. For example, in Africa the CAGR of mobile data users between 2010-2013 was 82% with penetration standing at 11%.
Mobile phones are commonplace even among the 70% of the poorest people of Africa who live in rural communities were the provision of electricity and other essential amenities are scarce and unreliable.
The impact of data content and services on mobile devices for people living in developing countries is deeply shaped by the low availability and high cost of accessing relevant digital content coupled with notions of digital imperialism and non-mobile friendly content formats.
BluPoint, provides a physical content provisioning access point that is solar powered, to enable people in off-grid low resources communities to access free digital materials (text, pictures and videos) free of charge on their mobile phones and create/share their own digital content. BluPoint uses Bluetooth as the main data transit that is supported on both Smart and non-smart phones alike. It is envisioned that BluPoint will be located in rural health centres, schools, commercial centres, taxis, water wells and other places that people naturally gather and in time would create a mesh network. BluPoint will be used for content / service provision for commercial, health, government, local-community and entertainment sectors amongst these base of the pyramid users (BOtP). A transformational impact is made when digital materials are made available to people generally but this effect is amplified for people living in low-income off-grid situations that have not readily had access to this content. The purpose of BluPoint is to make assess to locally, nationally and internationally created digital content easy and free to everyone.
